ECOWAS & AfCFTA Trade

Ghana is a founding ECOWAS member and hosts the AfCFTA Secretariat in Accra — giving it a distinctive role as both practitioner and host of pan-African trade liberalisation. Intra-ECOWAS trade benefits from the ETLS common external tariff framework; AfCFTA progressively extends preferential treatment to all 54 African Union member states. In both cases, correct certificate-of-origin documentation is non-negotiable for preferential treatment to be granted at the border.

01
Obstacle

It is unclear which shipments to ECOWAS or AfCFTA partner states qualify for preferential tariffs and which require standard MFN customs procedures — leading to over-payment of duties on eligible shipments.

Solution

Supply chain documents and invoices that automatically flag ECOWAS or AfCFTA origin and include the required certificate-of-origin reference, enabling preferential treatment at every border crossing without manual intervention.

02
Obstacle

ECOWAS and AfCFTA export invoices are processed identically in the ERP, causing customs declarations to omit the preferential origin claim and be assessed at MFN rates.

Solution

Distinct trade-route logic for ECOWAS and AfCFTA in the invoicing and ERP modules, with correct declaration language, origin fields and certificate references per shipment destination.
