Corporate tax 22 % in Norway — complete guide

Norway has a flat corporate tax rate of 22 % since 2019. This applies to all bookkeeping-liable companies (AS, ASA, NUF, limited partnership). The tax return is submitted via Altinn by 31 May the following year. This guide walks through calculation, special rules and common pitfalls.

01

Calculation basis for corporate tax

Corporate tax = 22 % × taxable profit. Taxable profit = accounting result ± tax adjustments. The most important adjustments: depreciation per tax rules (groups a-e with rates 2-30 %), interest deduction limitation (EBITDA rule), exemption method for dividend income, and NDP (Norwegian Domiciled Person) rule for residency assessment.

02

The tax return and deadlines

Main deadline 31 May. Prepayment tax is paid quarterly: 15 February (Q1), 15 April (Q2), 15 September (Q3), 15 November (Q4). Balance due or refund is settled when the final tax return is processed by Skatteetaten. Late submission: 0.1 % per day of taxable amount, maximum 30 %.

03

AS vs NUF — taxation differences

AS (Aksjeselskap, Norwegian) = full Norwegian tax on all profit. NUF (Norwegian branch of Foreign Company) = taxation only of Norwegian permanent establishment. If you run a UK Ltd with a Norwegian branch, only Norwegian activity is taxed at 22 %, while UK activity is taxed at home. Double taxation treaties provide credit.

04

Loss carry-forward and merger

Losses can be carried forward indefinitely in Norway, but lose the carry-forward right on known ownership changes (50 % rule). On merger the loss carry-forward is taken over by the merged company if the business continues. The platform tracks losses per tax year and calculates expected tax benefit automatically.
